East Mississippi Community College dining team celebrates first generation college students

The dining team at East Mississippi Community College (EMCC) in Scooba, Miss., helped celebrate first generation college students during the school’s First Generation College Students Week last month.
The team, which is managed by Sodexo, was on hand throughout the week and provided infused water, tea, fruit, finger sandwiches, dessert bars and cookies during the week’s events.
They also managed hydration stations which featured hydration tips, a water infusion guide, cucumber and lemon infused water and an all-natural sports drink. The stations were part of the food service provider’s Mindful program that showcases recipes built around clean and healthy ingredients.
Students could also participate in a 3-on-3 basketball tournament as part of the celebration. The dining team awarded $20 in Flex Dollars to every player on the first place team and $10 Flex Dollars to each player who came in second place.
"Supporting first-generation college events is essential as it addresses the unique challenges of individuals forging a path to higher education within their families,” said Elizabeth Brunet, marketing coordinator for EMCC dining services, in a statement. “These initiatives foster community, empowerment, and mentorship, breaking down barriers and ensuring all students have the opportunity to succeed. It's an investment in the future, empowering students to achieve their educational goals and become trailblazers for future generations."
