Betti Wiggins named FSD of the Year 2017

The longtime FSD was honored for championing farm-to-fork fare and healthy options for K-12 students.

Championing farm-to-fork fare and healthy options for some of the industry’s youngest diners has earned Betti Wiggins the distinction of being named FoodService Director’s FSD of the Year.

Wiggins was announced as FSD of the Year on Monday evening at FoodService Director’s annual MenuDirections conference in Charlotte, N.C. She was selected from the magazine’s 12 FSD of the Month recipients for 2016, who were announced throughout that year.

As executive director of foodservices for Detroit Public Schools, Wiggins and her team serve close to 85,000 meals a day and provide food for over 30 charter and private schools in the area, while working to drive local sourcing as well as a variety of school gardening initiatives.

“We are feeding fresh Michigan asparagus to inner city teenagers, and they like it,” Wiggins said in an interview with FoodService Director last year.

Wiggins—who has served as an FSD for 26 years or so, working in school districts around the country—also led Detroit Public Schools to become the nation’s first district to provide all students with free breakfast.
