Impressive Expressionism

Vincent Van Gogh, who lived and died in poverty, might have rued the food waste but probably would have appreciated the artistic ambition of students at a northern Utah high school who recreated the artist's famous “Starry Night” painting using breakfast cereal. More than 150 teens from the appropriately named Sky View High School in Smithfield worked for about three and a half hours on the 6,400-sq.ft. replica, which was spread across the floor of the school gym.

They used a grid approach to section the painting; then individual students filled in the different sections with colored cereals donated by several local businesses. The cereal, laid about an inch thick, was “crunched” in some spots to lend texture.

The finished piece was displayed for parents to ooh and ahh over before being swept up and sent to a nearby pig farmer. Now, how's THAT for an artistic (and sustainable!) statement, Vincent?
