A lot of these are basically riffs on the chain's standard burger product, except with different proteins and toppings. Examples include the Ebi Filet-O (Japan), a fried shrimp patty with lettuce and Thousand Island dressing, and the Das Nurnburger (Germany), which has three bratwurst links with mustard inside the bun. For something that's even more of a departure, there's McKroket (Hungary) — fried pastry filled with beef stew on a bun — and the McRice Burger (Philippines), which is beef or chicken on sticky rice patties.

The breakfast sandwich also gets the international makeover, with impressive results: for example, the Croque McDo (France), which has ham and Emmental cheese on toasted sweet bread.

Naturally, there are also some pretty weird (to American taste buds) concoctions: the Korokke Burger (Japan), a sandwich with a fried potato patty, cabbage and teriyaki sauce, and Brie Nuggets (Russia), breaded and fried bits of brie cheese that actually sound tasty.

As peculiar as some of these products may be, onsite operators might get some ideas for unique products and ingredient combinations from them. For example, take the Bacon and Potato Pie (Japan), a deep fried pie filled with mashed potatoes, bacon and cheese that could be an interesting handheld breakfast or lunch selection; or the McMolettes (Mexico) — refried beans, cheese and pico de gallo on an English muffin, which gives a South of the Border twist to the traditional breakfast sandwich.

But whatever you do, stay away from the McD Chicken Porridge (Malaysia), which is chicken and onions in porridge… really…
