BURLESON ISD
BURLESON, TEXAS
Since Starbucks is a favorite destination for teens, high schools are getting students’ attention by replicating some of the chain’s beverages on-site—often setting up dedicated coffee bars. The Burleson school district started with hot lattes and moved on to blended ones. Instead of steaming the milk, cold nonfat milk is combined with espresso, sugar-free syrup and ice to make a frothy drink. The blended lattes are USDA-compliant, says Emily Jones, director of child nutrition, with fewer calories and sugar than Starbucks’ Frappuccinos. The frosty blended lattes are especially popular as the weather gets hotter, Jones adds, and Burleson serves the beverages all day for anytime snacks, even offering specialty flavors during the holidays, such as peppermint at Christmastime.
