To boost sustainable efforts on campus, Vanderbilt Dining is piloting a reusable to-go container program dubbed Choose to Reuse, student news outlet Vanderbilt Hustler reports.
The dining team partnered with Vanderbilt’s student government for the pilot, which starts Monday in the university’s Kissam Kitchen.
Program participants will be given branded carabiners that they can exchange for reusable to-go containers in the dining hall. Students are responsible for rinsing out the containers before returning them and obtaining a new carabiner.
Three hundred students will participate in this initial phase.
“We’ve been working with Dining for a few years, and a number of different iterations of this have come up,” Andrew Harwell, environmental affairs committee chair for Vanderbilt Student Government, told the Hustler. “One idea was a vending machine that would give you different containers you can return, but all of those didn’t work out for one reason or another. … We’ve been able to explore new options, and it seems like we can get a lot of these really cool things done.”
Student government and the dining team hope to roll out the program across campus next fall.
