Students at Tippecanoe Valley High School in Akron, Ind., are raising four steers to be used for school lunches as part of the school’s farm-to-fork program, Wane reports.

Students will raise the cattle to a certain weight, at which point the steers will be processed at a local USDA-inspected facility and used in school lunches.

The steers were purchased from a local farmer, who sold them to the school at a discount.

The farm-to-fork initiative stemmed from an idea spawned during a political economics studies class. The school is looking at grants and community partnerships to sustain the initiative in the future.
