School District Adds Subways

The Hampton (VA) school district is adding Subway branded stations to three additional high schools this fall after a successful experiment at one last year, reports the Hampton Daily Press. Bethel, Phoebus and Hampton high schools will join Kecoughtan high school in offering six varieties of the chain’s six-inch sub sandwiches.

About a thousand of the subs a week were sold last year at Kecoughtan, helping the school geenrate a $28,000 surplus, up substantially from the $15,000 generated the year before. The district hopes for similar results in the other locations. Students can choose a Vegetarian sub for $2, Turkey, Trio or Ham subs for $2.50 or the Club or Spicy Italian subs for $3 on the a la carte line or a four-inch version (vegetarian or the meat sub of the day) on the reimbursable lunch line.



Unlike Subway’s commercial units, the school cafeteria staff pre-assembles the sandwiches from the chain’s proprietary ingredients, though a made to-order model may be added in the future, along with other menu items like soups and toasted sandwiches. The start-up cost is about $1,500 per school.
