Roanoke City Public Schools (RCPS) in Roanoke, Va., is increasing student access to local produce during the pandemic through the Virginia Harvest of the Month Campaign.

Each month, Roanoke students will be able to learn about and try different varieties of locally grown produce

January’s Harvest of the Month was the sweet potato. RCPS and its foodservice provider, SodexoMAGIC, partnered with a local nonprofit to procure locally grown sweet potatoes that were given to students during curbside meal distribution.

Students and their families also received recipe ideas involving sweet potatoes and could find additional activities and recipes on the state’s farm-to-school website.
