New law requires Illinois schools to offer a plant-based lunch alternative to students

School nutrition programs in Illinois will be required to provide a plant-based lunch option to students who request one under a new law signed by Gov. JB Pritzker last week.

Under the measure, which goes into effect Aug. 1, 2023, students must submit a prior request to receive the meals.

A similar bill has been introduced in New York that would require schools to offer plant-based meals as well as kosher and halal options if requested.
