Colorado may expand a state program that would cover the reduced-price lunch fee for eligible high school students, Colorado Pubic Radio reports.
The state has recently advanced a bill through the House and the Senate education committees that would expand the state’s School Lunch Protection Program to high school students. The bill now heads to the Appropriations Committee.
Through the program, the state covers the 40-cent reduced-priced lunch fee for students who qualify for reduced-priced lunches under the National School Lunch Program. Currently, the waiver is only available for students in preschool through eighth grade.
If the bill passes, the state expects to serve more than 1.1 million free lunches to high schoolers that qualify for reduced-priced meals. The state expects it will cost just under $464,000 to implement.
