In this edition of 5 Things, Food Management highlights five things you may have missed recently about developments affecting onsite dining.

 1.    UMass tops Princeton Review Best Campus Food list for seventh time

The University of Massachusetts Amherst has been named the top school for the seventh time in the 2024 Princeton Review Best Campus Food list. The rest of the top 10 in order are Cornell University, Bowdoin College, Pitzer College, Washington University in St. Louis, Vanderbilt University, University of Dayton, Virginia Tech, Kansas State University and St. Olaf College.

 2.    Million dollar donation lets children hospital expand food pharmacy program

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has announced that it has received a $1 million gift from The GIANT Company to fund the expansion of its Food Pharmacy program, which provides nutritious food and better health outcomes for families experiencing food insecurity. This donation will bring CHOP’s Food Pharmacy program to the Nicholas and Athena Karabots Primary Care Center in Norristown, PA and deliver much-needed services directly to families’ doorsteps.

 3.    Snap ending remote work food benefit

For the last three years Snapchat workers received a weekly stipend for food but that benefit is now disappearing as Snap wants to get people in the office at least four days a week. Instead of the food benefit, workers have been told to "explore" on-site lunch offerings.

 4.    Marshall University extends elite athletic nutrition program to student body

Marshall University Athletics and Marshall University are teaming together to bring a healthy, on-campus dining option to Marshall's Memorial Student Center for the 2023-24 academic year. Herd Fuel at the John Marshall Dining Room brings elite level nutrition by configuring a meal plan that serves as a healthy benefit for all who dine at the location.

 5.    Ballpark’s concessions have funneled over $20 million to local nonprofits since 2010

The Minnesota Twins and Delaware North have announced that more than $20 million in concession revenues have been reinvested back into the community through the organizations’ nonprofit volunteer program. Beginning with the first exhibition game in April 2010, select concession stand locations for each Twins home game and Target Field event have been staffed by volunteers working on behalf of a nonprofit organization with a portion of the proceeds from sales at these stands are diverted back to support that NPO’s mission.
