Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer has proposed creating a $1 million fund that would pay off students’ lunch debt as part of her 2020-21 education budget proposal, Chalkbeat reports

In order to be reimbursed, schools would not be allowed to stigmatize students who can’t pay for lunch. Schools are also required to communicate directly with parents and guardians when discussing their child’s lunch debt
