School family recipe contest results in new menu items and cookbook

Focus groups done by Putnam County School District's (Palatka, FL) School Nutrition Services found that most of all, children in the rural school district with a diverse population wanted to eat “healthy meals…similar to what they eat at home.”

Students entered their favorite family recipes (which had to include whole grains, dark green or orange veggies or dry beans or peas).

Student judges who selected the following winners, which were placed on the lunch menu: Sloppy Joes by Moises Ramirez; Tostados by Alexandra Jimenez; Carrot-Raisin Salad by Elizabeth Jimenez; Aloha Chicken by Sierra Dzwonczyk; and Pizzazz Philly Cheese Sandwiches by Lyleigha Golden.
