LAUSD has implemented its “Save It for Later” program in schools to minimize food waste, allowing students to save nonperishable food items to eat outside the meal period. It also participates in the California Thursday initiative, committing to serving California-grown products on the menu that day. The district has been intensifying its advocacy of meatless offerings and is seen as one of the first K-12 districts in the U.S. to advocate for the rollout of daily vegan options at a growing number of schools.
