While healthy eating can be a challenge for kids, Sodexo has teamed up with the elementary students in the school districts it serves to create fun, appetizing recipes for its 2016 Future Chefs: Healthy Breakfast Challenge.

The national initiative was created six years ago to promote healthy food choices and encourage innovation in the kitchen, according to a release.

Five finalists participating in the program were chosen from nearly 2,500 student entries representing 1,300 Sodexo-served elementary schools. Those five dishes and their corresponding “future chefs” are:

  • Sweet potato pancakes with grilled pineapple (Ella Dettloff, Old Bridge Township Public Schools; Old Bridge, N.J.)

  • Boil-in-a-bag omelet (Madysun Christensen, Granite School District; Salt Lake City)

  • Coconut apricot energy balls (Rivka Guzman, Mukilteo School District; Mukilteo, Wash.)

  • Bobcat breakfast tart (Qui-Raun Pressley, Georgetown Independent School District; Georgetown, Texas)

  • Egg-cellent breakfast cupcakes with yake yogurt bites & gator green smoothie (Isabelle Sarkody, Woodhaven-Brownstown School District; Woodhaven, Mich.)
