Aramark to cut greenhouse gas emissions by a quarter by 2030

Aramark has committed to significantly slashing the greenhouse gas emissions related to the food it serves, saying it will reduce these emissions by 25% by the year 2030.

The foodservice management company has underscored this commitment by signing the World Resource Institute’s (WRI) Cool Food Pledge, a move Aramark says is a first among contract feeders.

“Partnering with WRI on the Cool Food Pledge will help us slash our food-related greenhouse gas emissions, while substantially expanding the availability of Cool Food Meals,” Alan Horowitz, vice president of sustainability at Aramark, said in a statement. “This will make it easier for more of our guests to make climate-friendly and plant-forward meal choices, which according to our research, is what they increasingly want.”

Earlier this year, Aramark-run dining operations at 10 universities across the country began using the WRI’s Cool Food Meals badge to call out menu items that carry a lower carbon footprint.

The company says it's expanding its offerings of eco-friendlier, plant-forward fare and will bring Cool Food Meals to additional locations in higher education, business and industry, and healthcare in January.
