Performance Food Group (PFG) is the latest food distributor to go electric.

PFG is teaming up with commercial truck manufacturers Navistar, Great Dane and Carrier Transicold to launch a battery-electric truck that uses all-electric refrigeration technology, according to a press release.  

The truck, which is Carrier Transicold’s electric truck refrigeration unit, features a factory-installed ePower electrical system and an insulated body by Great Dane. The truck will serve PFG operations in California, where a new regulation requires the adoption of zero direct emissions truck refrigeration technologies.

In 2022, the food distributor set a goal to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions intensity by 15% by 2030. 

“Mitigating our carbon footprint through use of advanced technologies helps us to be responsible stewards of the environment,” said Jeff Williamson, senior vice president of operations at PFG. “The use of direct-emissions-free transportation and refrigeration technologies by these industry-leading collaborators offers tremendous potential in helping us to achieve key sustainability goals and metrics.”

PFG is the latest in a string of food distributors to make strides on electric vehicle (EV) commitments. Sysco, for instance, is in the process of transforming a distribution center into an electric vehicle hub, and US Foods recently added EVs to its delivery fleet.
