SNA looks forward to working with new president, Congress

Child nutrition reauthorization remains unresolved and may have to await the new administration.

In the wake of the national election results of November 2016, School Nutrition Association (SNA) Director of Media Relations Diane Pratt-Heavner issued this statement: “SNA looks forward to working with the new Administration and new Congress to ensure school meal programs have the necessary resources to meet the nutritional needs of America’s students.”

SNA has been pushing for “a robust Child Nutrition Reauthorization bill, including the Senate agreement on school meal standards, so school nutrition programs can responsibly plan for the upcoming school year,” per its 2016 position paper.

Reauthorization of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act has been awaiting action in Congress, caught up in election year politics that may now have clarified with the election over. Both the House and Senate have reauthorization bills passed in committee, but they have differences in areas like the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) threshold that must be reconciled before reauthorization can become law.

Unless child nutrition reauthorization is passed by a lame duck session of Congress before the end of this year, and signed into law by President Obama, the legislation will have to start afresh after the new Congress and president take office in January.
