Comfort foods are a sure winner for foodservice—especially right now. Familiar, favorite foods are always a big seller; but now, more than ever, employees and visitors are looking for food that makes them happy. And that extends to breakfast foods, too—not just hearty dinner entrees such as lasagna, macaroni and cheese or barbecue pork. By offering familiar comfort foods for breakfast, foodservice operators can help boost customer satisfaction as well as staff morale—and these items can also help boost sales by making breakfast a convenient option to buy onsite. Here’s a few ways operators can increase interest in breakfast.
Fast and convenient options
According to Technomic’s 2019 Breakfast Consumer Trend Report, a little more than one third of consumers (36%) say they skip breakfast three or more times per week, and a full 50% say they skip breakfast at least once a week on weekdays. Overwhelmingly, it’s because they don’t have time for it. For foodservice operators, offering familiar grab-and-go options—menu items such as breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos or breakfast tacos—can be a great way to attract more people to the breakfast menu. This way, consumers can pick up a quick bite to eat on their way into work, without having to plan ahead to make an extra stop, and visitors and employees can start their day with a comforting breakfast.
Favorite brands
Another way to increase consumers’ interest in breakfast is by including brands they’re familiar with and highlighting those ingredients. For instance, 66% of consumers say it’s at least somewhat important to them that foodservice locations offer brand-name condiments for breakfast foods, so that same logic could follow for ingredients such as brand-name cheeses or breakfast meats, such as sausage. Johnsonville Breakfast Sausage, for example, is a premium, high-quality option that’s widely recognizable—add it to breakfast sandwiches, a la carte dishes, omelets and more.
Innovative additions to classics
Finally, while familiar foods are what many consumers gravitate toward when purchasing breakfast, some may be looking for innovative, craveable options that may be a bit different from the norm. Operators can achieve this by making small tweaks to existing menu items diners love. For example, add a spread of chipotle mayonnaise and sliced avocado to a sausage-egg-and-cheese croissant sandwich for a Southwestern twist, or offer a sweet-n-salty breakfast sandwich with French Toast-flavored Breakfast Sausage and French toast instead of the traditional biscuit, bagel or toast.
By updating breakfast so that it’s still familiar, but features one or two exciting ingredients, operators can give their customers the tasty, comfort-food breakfast they love without having to make major menu overhauls.
