Among the five most popular K-12 Food Management articles, the top story was about the USDA issuing transitional school meal standards through 2023-24. It is engaging in notice and-comment rulemaking to update the meal pattern standards to reflect the 2020-5 Dietary Guidelines for Americans more comprehensively. The rule finalizes the proposed milk provision by allowing local operators of the National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast program to offer flavored, low-fat (1%) milk for students in grades K-12 and for sale as a competitive beverage.

Additionally, a school nutrition director shares why foodservice pros should learn about the red meat allergy known as Alpha Gal Syndrome sooner rather than later.

Among other stories in this week’s gallery:

  • The 2022 K-12 Power Players deal with an ongoing pandemic;

  • New York City school cafeterias are going all vegan on Fridays; and

  • SNA is calling for waiver extensions through the 2022-23 school year.
