In this month’s recap of the Top 5 most popular K-12 Food Management articles, SNA survey indicates anxiety over coming K-12 school year ranked as the week’s top story. The School Nutrition Association’s Back to School 2021 Survey reveals serious financial, regulatory and operational concerns for the upcoming school year among K-12 school meal program directors. Fiscal issues were a major concern as school meal programs have always operated on extremely tight budgets, a situation exacerbated by pandemic-related losses and rising costs. Among other stories in this week’s gallery:

  • Take a ‘behind the fields’ tour of Spartanburg schools’ thriving organic farm in South Carolina; and

  • High school farmers bring in the greens.

In other news, a new cafeteria/kitchen complex gives high school a college vibe. San Rafael High School recently added a 43,000-sq.ft. cafeteria/central kitchen facility that will allow enhanced meal production for district schools while giving the high school’s students a college-style commons area.
