Public schools in Los Angeles and San Diego announce remote learning for the start of the school year
Both districts say they will return to in-person instruction as soon as it is safe to do so.
Los Angeles Unified School District and San Diego Unified School District have announced that they will start the upcoming school year remotely following a surge of COVID-19 cases in California.
“Those countries that have managed to safely reopen schools have done so with declining infection rates and on-demand testing available,” the districts stated. “California has neither. The skyrocketing infection rates of the past few weeks make it clear the pandemic is not under control.”
Both districts will start the school year on time on Aug. 18, and free meals will continue to be served to students at the current meal sites. Officials say they will continue planning for in-person instruction and hope to welcome back students to classrooms sometime this school year.
