NYC Public Schools becomes first large district to open all schools for in-person learning

NYC Public Schools has now opened all of its schools for in-person learning, The New York Times reports.

The New York City district welcomed back elementary, middle and high school students this week, after phasing in earlier grades in recent days. Students were originally supposed to return to in-person class earlier last month; however, the city delayed its reopening twice. 

Around 480,000 children have decided to opt-out of in-person class and are continuing to participate in remote learning only. Those students have the option to pick up free breakfast and lunch each school day at designated sites.

NYC Public Schools is the largest school district in the U.S. Los Angeles Unified School District and Chicago Public Schools—the second- and third-largest, respectively—opted to begin the school year remotely.
