The New York City Dept. of Education has threatened to dock uncollected lunch money totals from the budgets of principals, reports the New York Times. The district has realized at least $42 million in uncollected lunch fees from parents since 2004, an amount that the city has had to absorb. In 2010-11, there is already a $2.5 million deficit for just the first three months of the school year. In a time of fiscal crisis, the Education dept. says, it can no longer afford to do this.
