Jefferson County Accepts Community Eligibility Option for 95 School Sites

The Jefferson County (KY) School Board has voted unanimously to enroll 95 of its school sites in the USDA's community school meal eligibility option and will begin offering free breakfast and lunch for some 55,000 students at those sites beginning this fall, reports the Louisville Courier-Journal. The sites qualifying for the community eligibility option include 60 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, 11 high schools and 12 specialty schools. The district was 27th on Food Management's K-12 Power Players listing last year with an enrollment of 101,000 and 148 school sites. It's school meal program serves about 90,000 meals a day and had an budget of $52.3 million last year.
