District halts plan to add PB&J to all elementary schools

Leon County Schools in Tallahassee, Fla., is no longer going forward with a plan to add peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to schools that previously didn’t allow peanut products, WCTV reports.

The district is reversing course due to pushback by parents concerned that children with peanut allergies wouldn’t be safe with the new menu addition. 

Leon County was planning on introducing the sandwiches as a new menu option when it switched over to providing universal free lunch to elementary students. District officials say they were looking to add dishes that were more appealing for students, saying the current option of soy butter and jelly at some schools was not popular with students. 

The district’s superintendent says that they will now look at adding other menu items that don’t contain peanuts such as chicken nuggets or mac and cheese.
