Making it a clean sweep of the nation's three largest school systems, Chicago Public Schools has announced that it will eliminate soft drinks, candy and fat-laden snacks from vending machines in its buildings. New York City Public Schools and the Los Angeles USD announced similar bans in recent months.

Under the new policy, snacks may not have more than 30 percent of their calories from fat and be no more than 40 percent sugar by weight. Candy and chewing gum are banned outright.

The policy is slated to be considered this month by the district's board of education and implemented beginning next fall.
