Charleston County Schools eliminates plastic foam trays from meal service

The move is expected to keep 2.9 million plastic trays from ending up in the landfill.

Charleston County School District in Charleston, S.C., is removing plastic foam trays from its meal service, ABC News reports. 

The move is expected to keep 2.9 million plastic trays from ending up in the landfill. The district originally piloted using compostable meal trays at one of its elementary schools last year. 

The new trays are made from a paper byproduct, and each one costs an additional 3 cents. Schools that use reusable trays and dishwashers will not see a change.
