2 new districts join the Urban School Food Alliance

The nonprofit now serves more than 4 million children throughout the country and has an annual purchasing power of more than $875 million in food and supplies.

The Urban School Food Alliance has added two new member districts, expanding its membership to 17 schools.

San Diego Unified School District and Shelby County Schools in Memphis, Tenn., have joined the nonprofit, which is made up of some of the largest districts in the country, including Chicago Public Schools and Los Angeles Unified School District.

With San Diego and Shelby County, the Alliance now serves more than 4 million children nationwide and has raised its total annual purchasing power to more than $875 million in food and food supplies.

“These two districts are leaders in school foodservice and exemplify our mission of providing healthy meals to all students through sustainable and socially responsible practices,” Dr. Katie Wilson, executive director for the Alliance, said in a statement. “Their membership will expand the geographic reach of the Alliance and strengthen the collective voice of our members in sharing industry best practices and pushing for systems level change.”
