York Hospital in York, Maine, was awarded a $4,000 one-year grant from United Way of York County that will enable it to expand its meal delivery program to two additional communities.

The meal delivery program started in 1999 as more patients began to request help during recuperation from surgery or illness. Since then, it’s grown beyond York Hospital patients to include the community at large. Delivered meals include daily specials offered at the hospital’s York campus cafeteria. A fleet of volunteer drivers make weekday trips to deliver the meals based on same-day orders.

The hospital delivers nearly 3,000 meals annually to residents of York and Kittery—because of the grant, it can now deliver to Eliot and Ogunquit, Maine, too.

This investment will help the hospital provide more meals to seniors, families and individuals in need of nutritious prepared meals delivered to them in their homes, according to Seacoastonline.com.
