A complete renovation of the café servery at Orlando Regional Medical Center, completed in August 2015, tripled the size of the fresh produce bar and put additional emphasis on interactive cooking stations. These help promote Orlando Health’s wellness emphasis, as the preparation method of all selections served at the Orlando Health Heart Institute café meet the system’s stringent Healthy U criteria.

The new café boasts an abundance of locally sourced produce and seafood selections, and AVI hosts monthly farmers markets where healthy, fresh produce is featured to engage the community.

During the renovation, AVI temporarily moved from a 25,000-square-foot food production space to outdoor trailers with less than 7,000 square feet to accommodate construction needs.

In the adjacent UF Health Cancer Center, AVI provides culinary demonstrations and food workshops with dietitians for staff and the community.

On the patient dining side, concierges provide options to and collect orders from most patients at bedside. In select units such as cancer rehabilitation, they are available on demand to explain options and provide meals directly to patients.

To ensure satisfaction, the foodservice team frequently performs rounds to patients. Comments are collected via iPad and immediately shared with the onsite management team. All results are studied and actionable changes are made as necessary.

The AVI Team recently launched a proprietary new low-sodium spice blend (smoked paprika is a key component) specifically designed to the demographics of the system, which has a large cluster of Hispanic, Puerto Rican, Jamaican and Caribbean residents. This serves as an alternative to salt in many dishes. Another program nearing final stages of development at the Cancer Center is a new Super Foods Menu that integrates at least one of 17 cancer-fighting super foods into every meal served.
