UMass looks to set another world record with world’s largest clambake

AMHERST, Mass. — First there was the sushi roll, then came the stir-fry.

And now for the fifth year in a row, the University of Massachusetts Dining Services is going for another world record this time for the world's largest New England clambake.

The plan is to serve lobsters, clams and side dishes to more than 3,000 people Monday at Haigis Mall as part of "Welcome to UMass Amherst" festivities.

While there is no previous record for the largest New England clambake, Guinness officials have set the minimum bar at serving 1,500 in eight hours.

UMass Amherst plans to serve 3,000 in two hours, Christopher Howland, UMass Amherst's Auxiliary Enterprises director of purchasing and marketing said in a statement. "We'll have 100 pots boiling at one time, between the seafood and potatoes."
