May 28— Texas Governor Rick Perry has signed into law a bill that expands the state’s breakfast program to more than one million students in 1,000 schools.
Roughly three million public school students in Texas qualify for federally funded free or reduced price school meals. The law will have no fiscal impact on the state, as the schools’ costs are typically offset by future reimbursement rates.
Last year's state school breakfast program had a participation rate of 59.7%, which gave Texas a reimbursement of $460,290,681. With the increased student participation expected from the new law, this number could potentially rise to $600 million.
