Nevada extends universal free meals for another year
The state will use federal funding to continue providing free meals through the next school year.
Nevada students will continue to receive universal free meals at school for the 2023-2024 school year, thanks to a new allotment of federal funds.
The state’s Interim Finance Committee approved $28 million in American Rescue Plan Act funds to continue offering the free meals.
Earlier this summer, the state invested $75 million to enable all students to receive free school meals for the current school year after the expiration of the U.S. Department of Agriculture waivers that allowed schools across the country to offer meals at no charge to all students.
Other states, including Massachusetts and Vermont, are also offering free school meals to all students this year, and California, Maine and, most recently, Colorado are offering free school meals as a permanent part of the school day.
