Lawmakers introduce universal free meals bills in Maryland

Two bills have been introduced in Maryland that would provide free breakfast and lunch to students in the state.

HB0628 would require schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program or School Breakfast Program to offer free breakfast and lunch each day to all students. It has been referred to the House Ways and Means Committee and, if passed, would go into effect in 2025. 

A companion bill has also been introduced in the state Senate and was referred to the Budget and Taxation Committee.

Maryland is the latest state to consider offering universal free meals. Others, including Minnesota, Washington and Rhode Island, have also introduced bills this legislative session to implement free meals at school for all students.
