5 silver linings from this week: June 19 edition
Operators are continuing to step up to reduce hunger in their communities.
This week, dining teams across the country continued to go the extra mile to help community members who may not have easy access to meals. In addition, one school district is honoring a cafeteria employee who passed away from COVID-19. Here are five silver linings we spotted this week.
1. Feeding the needy
The dining team at Boston College in Newton, Mass., has been working with several local organizations, such as the YMCA, to donate items for local families facing food insecurity. The donations include both individual food items and complete meals. The dining team says it has served over 149,000 people since the start of the pandemic.
2. Partnering with state parks
Cafeteria teams at six state parks in West Virginia spent the past several weeks preparing 200,000 meals for students learning from home. The parks helped nearby school districts by providing both breakfast and lunch, and the meals included items such as whole-grain corn dogs and pepperoni rolls.

3. Honoring a victim of COVID-19
Officials at Clark County Schools in Las Vegas are renaming one of the district’s cafeterias in honor of a nutrition employee who passed away due to COVID-19.

4. Delivering meals and smiles
York Hospital in York, Maine, has continued its to run its meal-delivery program for seniors during the pandemic. The hospital’s dining team prepares meals that are then delivered to seniors’ homes by volunteers. Those meals now include cards and well wishes to help isolated seniors who may be feeling lonely.

5. Checking temperatures
Waterbury Public Schools in Waterbury, Conn., is passing out free thermometers with meals. The thermometers come with an application that provides customized health guidance and can hook up to cell phones to record data for different family members.
