Washington University of St. Louis is phasing out almost all sales of bottled water on campus, reports the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Coca-Cola Co., the university's official branded beverage supplier, says it will stop selling bottled water in almost all campus locations by the end of the fall semester, though a few will continue to have it available until the end of the school year because of contractual obligations. The university says the move is a sustainability issue, citing the number of used bottles that end up in the waste stream and the energy it takes to manufacture and transport bottled water. It is encouraging the consumption of local tap water from reusable cups and containers as an alternative.
