The Senate's Subcommittee on Contracting Oversight held hearings this week on rebates received by contractors supplying food to public institutions, including schools, hospitals, government facilities and the military, reports The State Column.

Those testifying before the committee chaired by Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-Mo.) included USDA Inspector General Phyllis Fong, New York Assistant AG John Carroll and Charles Tiefer, former commissioner on the U.S. Commission on Wartime Contracting. New York's Office of the Attorney General had sued several contractors working for school systems in the state over their rebate practices, an issue Carroll addressed in a speech to the School Nutrition Association this past spring.
