Massachusetts Looks to Ban Food Waste Disposal

The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection has proposed a ban on the disposal of commercial food waste by large restaurants, supermarkets and food-service institutions, to take effect by July 1, 2014, reports the Boston Business Journal. The ban would require any operator that dumps at least one ton a week of organic waste to dispose of it either by donating or repurposing it. New York City is looking into a similar program that would also apply to individual consumers. San Francisco has had a mandatory recycling/composting ordinance applying to all persons since 2009.
