Collaboration on Ground Beef Traceability
Performance Food Group and IdentiGEN say they have developed the first commercial solution to trace ground meat back to its origins using DNA technology. The collaboration marks the first time DNA TraceBack technology, previously used to trace cuts of meat, has been used to trace ground beef to its Black Angus origins. This deployment follows a collaborative effort, begun in January 2010, between IdentiGEN and the manufacturers of PFG's Braveheart Black Angus Beef hamburgers.
Whole Grain Challenge Winners Named
Educational nonprofit Oldways and the Whole Grains Council have announced the winners of the 5th annual Whole Grains Challenge. The winners in the onsite foodservice categories included Syracuse University (College/University), Osseo School District of Maple Grove MN (Public K-12), Winsor School of Boston (Private K-12) and Eurest Dining (Workplace). In addition, St. Peter's Hospital of Helena, MT, and Westlake Medical Center of Austin, TX, tied for the award in the Healthcare category.
Vollrath Promotes Wagner
Nancy Wagner has been named vice president of supply chain at Vollrath. Previously the director of customer service, she was responsible for Vollrath's customer service, technical service and international warehouses, and had also taken on a leadership role in the effort to integrate Vollrath's recent acquisitions, including Anvil America, Inc., Lincoln Smallwares and Traex Company. In her new position, Wagner will oversee procurement, distribution, service and planning for the company.
