Golden Gate Bridge's Historic Round House to Resume Food Service
Renovation designed to produce a viable dining site by May.
February 18, 2014
Food service will return at the Round House building at the Golden Gate Bridge, reports the Marin Independent Journal.
The iconic art-deco circular building at the southeast foot of the span started out as a diner in 1938 just after the bridge opened. After decades in that role it eventually became office space for the bridge district and then a gift store.
It ultimately served as a launching point for audio tours and a place to take photos after interior renovations were made as part of the span's 75th anniversary in 2012.
But the latter operation shut down in November after failing to generate much revenue. Now there is another renovation with plans of re-opening the structure by May with food service. The Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy has an agreement with bridge officials to operate the building.
