Food news flash: Sandwiches are here to stay, baby! While we’ve reported on bowls perhaps edging out sandwiches on the menu, this year’s Best Sandwich competition has quite possibly squashed that theory in a panini press.

After weathering a couple years of sink-or-swim pandemic problems with supply chain, labor and more, onsite chefs in healthcare, B&I, schools, colleges, sports venues and senior dining are biting back with creativity and resilience, and the drive to create delicious sandwiches for hungry customers in these categories: Classic, chicken, global, seafood, vegetarian and wild card. We’ve selected five winners from each category. Be sure to see the special Best in Show Sandwich at the end of this gallery.

Special note to those who submitted burgers: We should have been clearer, but we’ve decreed a burger isn’t a sandwich for this contest, mainly because it’s not a fair fight! But not to worry, we are going to share the best burgers in the bunch later this year, along with our runners up and other breakout categories we found in this year’s sandwich crop, including steak, banh mi, Latin American and barbecue.
