Are antioxidants mostly hype?
If you’ve ever felt extra virtuous for drinking a pomegranate and blueberry smoothie or popping an antioxidant supplement, the latest research could pull the rug out from under you. It’s not that antioxidants aren’t good—it’s just that they probably won’t reverse the aging process the way we’ve accepted as fact since the early 1990s. “Marketing of the alleged health benefits of antioxidants has been at saturation levels…the result is that antioxidants have a powerful health halo, one that they did not earn through scientific study,” according to a recent article in Science-Based Medicine.
