Sterling College awarded for food sustainability
The college grows 20 percent of its own food on campus and has one of the country’s first collegiate sustainable-agriculture programs.
Sterling College has been awarded a Special Achievement Award in Food for its sustainability efforts, as part of Sierra magazine ’s annual “Cool Schools” ranking for 2015, which evaluates universities’ sustainability initiatives.
The list ranked Sterling No. 2 of 153 institutions for sustainable food. The college grows 20 percent of its own food on campus and has one of the country’s first collegiate sustainable-agriculture programs.
“Our entire community is invested in making sure our food system is a model for what we want to see in the world, a beta test,” said the university’s Executive Chef Simeon Bittman in a statement. “We use our campus as a living laboratory to grow our own food, to demonstrate how to radically reduce food waste, and to create a food system that doesn’t exacerbate climate change.”
Sterling College has also recently been named one of BestColleges.com’s “Greenest Colleges and Universities.”
