Utah state employees will be able to use paid leave to volunteer as cafeteria workers, teachers and other school staff under a new executive order issued by Gov. Spencer Cox.

The executive order is intended to help Utah schools combat staffing shortages and keep them open for in-person learning.

Participating employees will have to go through a given district’s hiring process, which includes a background check. Employees are eligible to receive both state pay and compensation from the school district.

North Carolina has also temporarily allowed state employees to use paid leave to fill in for school staff.
