The University of Akron (UA) has engaged Aramark to operate its campus dining services, the first time an outside company will run the in-house foodservice operation in the school’s 145 year history.

The move is part of a cost-cutting initiative announced earlier this year to save $40 million over three years. The Aramark deal is expected to contribute about $800,000 to that goal over the same period, according to a report in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, which also noted that the dining services annual budget is around $16.5 million.

Aramark will invest around $7 million in the program over the three years of the deal, according to the school, and will be adding branded concepts such as Panda Express, Steak ‘n Shake and Chick-fil-A this year and Au Bon Pain and Qdoba in 2016.

The public university has an enrollment of around 27,000 students, of whom around 5,500 live on campus.
