Report: Child nutrition reauthorization markup set for Jan. 20
Senate Ag Committee looks to move compromise bill that would update and renew expired Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act.
**UPDATE** An earlier version of the story said the vote would be Jan. 20; instead the Senate committee markup will take place Jan. 20. **UPDATE**
The Senate Agriculture Committee is set to move a bipartisan bill to reauthorize child nutrition programs on Jan. 20, reports agri-pulse.com.
The bill will provide some flexibility to operators of school and summer feeding programs, but also will have “a strong emphasis on continuing the advancements” in nutrition made under the expired Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, according to a source familiar with the draft legislation, the site adds.
The child nutrition law expired last September and a reauthorization has been held up over disagreements about relaxing some of its provisions as well as funding issues. Child nutrition programs have been authorized since on a temporary basis through appropriation bills.
According to Agri-pulse, the bill coming out of the Agriculture committee reflects compromises worked out between Republican Ag Committee Chairman Pat Roberts of Kansas and ranking Democrat Debbie Stabenow of Michigan.
