3 Quick Bites: Times unveils 2015’s new food words

Every week, I compile a short list of food items on the Internet that made me hungry, curious, confused or all of the above.

New food words coined
Are you hangry for a piecaken? The New York Times unveiled the top new food words of 2015, and hangry (so hungry you’re angry), piecaken (a multilayered dessert), and cat café (self explanatory) all made the list. “We need new words and labels to give voice to our food obsessions and anxieties,” Josh Friedland, author of the new book “Eatymology: The Dictionary of Modern Gastronomy,” told the Times.

Regional collard and cornbread sandwich
In Robeson County, N.C., there’s a regional sandwich that’s just waiting to be discovered by the rest of the world. At last year’s Southern Foodways Alliance symposium, a professor at the University of North Carolina raised awareness on the collard sandwich: collards nestled between two pieces of cornbread.

Recently featured in Garden & Gun magazine, the sandwich is sold by the hundreds by vendors at the Robeson County Fair.
