Weather caused 30-hour power outage.
September 13, 2012
Sept. 13—A 30-hour power outage following severe weather caused schools in Fort Scott, Kansas to keep their doors shut today because of rotten food.
"We've lost mostly refrigerated items that are potentially hazardous foods - milks and juices, cheese, any protein that we had already thawed," says Robin Button, food service director for the Fort Scott School District.
State and federal law requires schools to provide meals to its student body and with most of Fort Scott grocery stores also dealing with spoiled food, the school had no choice but to close for the day.
